   8. A. I love.
I love to go shopping with my friends on the weekend. My mom, though, hates to go shopping. My dad goes shopping when he needs to. My brother never goes shopping!

I love vs. I hate. I love is a very strong way of expressing a like or an interest. The opposite of to love is to hate. These are used with both things and people
In the summer, I want to buy shorts, a bathing suit ,sandals, a sun hat and a beach bag. I need sunglasses, too. In winter, I need to buy a coat,a winter hat, a scarf and gloves.

A bathing suit is called a swim costume in Australia.

My friends and I love to go to the shopping mall and hang out. The mall is a big shopping area. Usually it is indoors, not outdoors. It also has many restaurants and a movie theater.Sometimes, it has an arcade for playing video games and other games.

Movie theater is sometimes called cinema (England) or simply theater. This can also be spelled theatre (Australia).

We hate saying "good-bye." But, on Saturdays at 5 p.m., we want to spend time with our families. My dad always prepares something my brother and I like very much, such as spaghetti and salad. We eat salad with lettuce and tomatoes. Yummy!

A more common meal to prepare in Australia would be sausages and steak on the barbeque with potato scallops. What are potato scallops? They are whole, sliced potatoes that are covered in flour and fried.

  8. B. What are you looking for?
My grandparents are taking us to Main Street to go shopping for new clothes for school. They don't like to go to the mall. They always take us shopping in August. It is hot out but we must buy clothes for fall.

Main Street. Many times the main shopping street in a small town is called Main Street. In England this is called the High Street.

My brother and I are looking for many things.

The clerk in the store would like to help us but we say,"We are just looking."

In the U.K. this person is called the shop assistant.

I need jeans. They are blue and made of cotton.

I want some T-shirts. I like red, pink and yellow.

I must buy some sweaters. They are made of wool. I would like a striped sweater.

Remember that in Australia one says jumper.
My brother would like some tennis shoes but I would like boots. They are made of leather. I wear boots when it is cold out. I think I look cool in boots!

My brother hates to wear ties but he must buy one. He needs to wear it on holidays. My grandma finds one that is polka-dot.

We both buy new backpacks. Mine is very big and has many pockets. My brother's is smaller and has a picture of Spiderman on it. We buy a briefcase as a birthday gift for my mom.

I love to put many buttons and key chains on my backpack.

In the U.K., kids put badges on their backpacks.
My grandma buys me some bracelets, too. She is so nice. We even bought a new collar for Bugsy!

  8. C. Prices and sizes
Hmm.cute shoes! Excuse me, how much are these black shoes?
-Those shoes are sixty dollars.
That is expensive. Do you have anything cheaper?
-Yes, these are similar but are only thirty-five dollars.
Can I try them on?
-Sure. In what size?
I wear a size six.

Expensive is the opposite of cheap.
-We only have a size six and a half.
Oh, these are too big. How about in brown?
-Yes, we have them in brown in a size six.
I'll buy them.
-May I help you?
Yes, sir. I would like a blue and white striped cotton shirt in a size Medium.
-Hmm.we only have this one in a size Large or a size Small.
Let me try it on, please.
Yes, the Small fits. I'll buy it.
-Please go to the cash register and the clerk will ring it up for you.
Thank you.
-You're welcome.
-How would you like to pay for that shirt?
Do you accept credit cards? My grandma has one.
-Yes, we do. Would you like your receipt in the bag?
