  10. A. What should I do? Tell me!
I want to be healthy. I should eat well, drink a lot of water, exercise and get eight hours of sleep.

-I love to exercise.
Great. Then, exercise!
-I love to sleep.
Great. Then, sleep!
You may have noticed that when you tell someone what to do directly in English (a command) you simply use the same form of the verb as you do to make a sentence. For example: You eat well. Eat well!

That person over there is smoking. What about her?
-She should not smoke, she should exercise more and take better care of herself.

I don't like smoking.
- Please don't smoke!

That person does not eat well. Fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken and meat are healthy. He should drink water. He should not eat a lot of fried food like French fries and hamburgers.

Don't eat so many fried foods!
Note that when you make the negative of a command (telling someone what not to do) you say Don't and then the verb.

  10. B. When we were younger.
We ate too many fried foods.
We did not drink enough water.
What about you? Did you eat well?

Do you eat well now?

When my dad was younger...
He did not eat well. He did not like fruits.

Today...
He is not very healthy. He does not like vegetables.

He should eat more salads and more fruits, too. A salad is very healthy.
  10. C. Your little sister is very young. You explain to her what to do to stay   healthy.
My poor little sister!
I help my mom and dad with my baby sister. I give her milk and I do not give her sweets or nuts. She is allergic to nuts. In restaurants, I always have to say:
"Don't give her any nuts!" and I have to remind her:
"Don't eat any nuts."

Here, poor means she is unfortunate/ unlucky but if you change the sentence around:
My little sister is poor. This would mean she has no money.

When we go outside and it is cold out, she should always wear a coat, hat, scarf, gloves and boots.

In the winter, I say: "Don't forget to put on your coat and gloves!"
When it is warm and we go in the sun, she should always wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. I should, also!

In the summer, I say: "Don't forget to put on sunscreen and a hat!"

I teach my sister that our dog Bugsy needs a lot of care, too. A pet is an important responsibility. I should walk him three times a day for exercise, play with him every day, feed him well and be sure he gets a lot of water. I should also take him to the veterinarian for regular check ups.

Do you have a pet? What do you do to take care of it?
Walk him every day!
Give him plenty of water!
Take him to the veterinarian for checkups!
Don't give him chocolate!

If he is sick, what do we do?

Take him to the veterinarian.
It is one block from here.
Turn right at the corner and then go straight ahead.
It is on the left, near the pharmacy.

This is commonly referred to as the vet. In the U.K., people may also say the veterinary surgeon
In the U.K. people would more likely give a distance measurement.
Australians and people in the U.K. often call this the chemist.

  10. D. Illnesses.
When I was younger, I got sick/ill a lot. I missed a lot of school. I was always bored at home. Now, I do not get sick as much. But if I do, I sometimes go to the doctor.

If I have a cold or the flu, I have a headache, a runny nose, watery eyes, an earache and a sore throat. I should stay in bed and drink a lot of water. At the doctor's office, the doctor needs to look at my throat. She tells me:

-Open your mouth. Stick out your tongue. Say ah!

If I have a stomachache, I have diarrhea or I throw up. I should also stay in bed, eat bread and drink tea. At the doctor's office, she tells me:

-Don't get out of bed. Get a lot of rest. Drink tea.
-Excuse me. Where is your doctor's office?

In the U.K., this would be called the doctor's surgery.
Her name is Dr. Robinson. Her office is somewhat far away. You should drive, take a taxi or the bus.

My sister is afraid to go to the doctor's office. She doesn't like to get shots. She cries before we go. When we get to the office she tries to hide. I am brave. I know the doctor will help me to stay healthy. Sometimes I get a sticker or a lollipop when it is time to leave!
